Growing up as the second child out of ten siblings, I witnessed firsthand the important role that stokvel clubs played in my family’s life. My parents, both of whom worked hard to support our large family, were active members of stokvels that focused on burial and grocery expenses. For my parents, being part of a stokvel was a way to manage their limited financial resources and provide for our family’s needs.
My father, who has worked as a security guard for his entire life, never earned a large salary. However, he always made sure to contribute to the stokvel clubs that he belonged to. Similarly, my late mother was a street vendor who also struggled to make ends meet. Despite the challenges they faced, both of my parents recognized the importance of being part of a stokvel. They understood that by pooling their resources with others, they could achieve greater financial stability and security.
I remember watching my late mother and her friends, who were also street vendors, coming up with creative ways to survive and support their families. They would share tips on how to negotiate with customers, how to manage their inventory, and how to save money on supplies. They would also discuss the latest trends and products that they could sell to increase their income. These discussions were not only practical but also provided a sense of community and support for these hardworking women.
Stokvels have a long history in South Africa and are a vital part of many communities. They are often used to help members save money for specific purposes, such as funerals or school fees. In addition to providing financial assistance, stokvels can also foster a sense of solidarity and social support among members.
For my family, stokvels were a lifeline. They allowed us to manage our limited financial resources and provided a safety net in times of need. They also gave my parents a sense of belonging and community, which was especially important for my mother, who worked as a street vendor and often felt isolated.
Looking back on my childhood, I am grateful for the role that stokvels played in my family’s life. They provided us with a sense of security, community, and support that helped us navigate the challenges of growing up in a large family with limited resources. While my parents may not have had much money, they had the wisdom to recognize the value of being part of a stokvel, and that made all the difference.
